A religion of peace?

I will go out on a politically incorrect wing here and ask the question “is Islam a religion of peace?”

I base that question on what I have seen—not what the talking heads on TV say. Some things that happen over here are simply unspeakable.
Today, one of those things happened. Ideology, religion, and politics aside; all children are innocent and precious. They should be protected at all costs and never, ever targeted. To do otherwise in not only unholy, but it is inhuman.
My first instinct today was to call home and check on my girls. My second though was ‘thank God we are fighting them here and not at home.”
There are truly evil people here and they do terrible things often in the name of Allah. Where is Al Sadr? Why isn’t he condemning the violence? Isn’t he a spiritual leader? The silence is deafening! Draw a cartoon of Mohamed and they come out in droves; setting fires and looting stores. Plant explosives in a girls school—silence. Years ago, I was riding in a cab in Bahrain and I asked the driver about a mosque that we were driving by. He said “that is the Grand Mosque, if you go inside with shoes on, I will kill you.” Of course using a Mosque as a weapons cache is ok.
Yes, the vast majority of Muslims are good, decent people. Only a small fraction of Muslims are committing these evil acts. To stand idly by while evil men pervert your religion and kill innocent children in the name of you God—that is not the mark of a religion of peace.

does it really surprise you though? It's something that's always happened. So long as there are humans, there will be religion, and with that, people skewing that religion in such a way that someone always loses.

Lord knows how fortunate we are that the fighting is over there and not here though.

Newcomer to your blog and really enjoy reading your insights and very appreciative of your service in this war. I study theology (am Christian) and it pains me to no end to even hear the term moderate muslim. At the core of the Islamic belief system (of which you are keenly aware and have experienced)are directives and imperatives with regard to all non muslims.

The Koran of course is filled with them so claiming "context" as a means of denying them is deceitful.
When the Koran and it's true adherents are faithful to the directives within the book, the only true output or fruit of this form of religion is exactly what acts of violence you or I may witness on a daily basis coming out of Iraq or Afghanaistan. This is the projected output of the Real Islamic adherent.

Those that are referred to as "moderate muslims" really are not muslims. They may practice or label themselves as such but chances are they are some hybrid form of religion. Those that are peaceful are peaceful inspite of the doctrine they profess to be a part of.

No matter what they may call themselves, I am grateful for the practices of those not in alignment with the Islamic directives. This is a noble cause that you and your fellow soldiers are a part of and the peaceful souls of Iraq and Afghanistan are worth this effort. It saddens me that many of our countries leaders (USA) fail to grasp the morality of standing up for those who have been oppressed. God Be with you my friend... I am proud of each of you and will keep ya'll in my prayers.

Sincerely,
